![]() ![]() When I was thirteen, I endeavored to read Heaven to Betsy-the first of the series that depicts Betsy’s experiences in high school. As a child, I spent countless hours copying the Lois Lenski illustrations in painstaking pencil, acting out the scenes with my dolls, and writing endless fan fiction on an old computer. ![]() I grew up reading and rereading the first four books in this classic series of an imaginative girl growing up in the early 1900s, which were published in the 1940s and ‘50s. In fact, I can’t even remember a time when I didn’t count Betsy Ray and Tacy Kelly among my best book friends. I discovered the work of Maud Hart Lovelace at a very young age. ![]()

![]() ![]() Thomas and Ted are mystified, as they saw a note stating that the lift was out of order when they walked Treves back. The next morning, Treves is found dead in his hotel room and his death is attributed to heart failure from climbing up the stairs to his room the previous night, greatly upsetting Lady Tressilian. ![]() Mr Treves remembers the case and the child as a result of a distinctive physical feature which he does not reveal. The child was given a new name and a fresh start, despite a local man having seen the child practising assiduously with a bow and arrow. That night, Mr Treves told a story of an old case, where a child killed another child with an arrow, which was ruled an accident. The dinner party is uncomfortable, as Lady Tressilian had predicted. ![]() Staying in hotels nearby are Kay’s friend, Ted a long time family friend, Thomas Royde, home after a long stretch working overseas and still faithfully waiting on the sidelines for Audrey and Mr Treves, an old solicitor and long time friend of the Tressilians. Lady Tressilian grudgingly agrees to this set of incompatible guests. He proposes to bring both his new wife, Kay, and his former wife, Audrey, to visit at the same time – a change from past years. ![]() Tennis star Nevile Strange, former ward of Lady Tressilian’s deceased husband, incurs her displeasure. Lady Tressilian is now confined to her bed, but still invites guests to her seaside home at Gull’s Point during the summer. ![]() ![]() ![]() But it is in these rough patches that Blasim's argument for a truth emerges. Occasionally, there are missteps, places where a story and ending feel mismatched. Most of these stories feel ready to collapse or explode at any moment. Instead, they are stories where the reader is dragged along and left suddenly with a handful of ashes. The single story told is hardly the biggest tear-jerker instead, the story is almost ordinary in its cruelty, its absurdity and its inconclusive ending.īlasim's are not finely wrought stories, where each word feels as though it has been carefully glued into place. An old woman "close to ninety" mutters, "If I told my story to a rock, it would break its heart." But we don't hear the old woman's story or those from most of the others gathered at the station. They've been told that the best among their stories will win valuable prizes, and each thinks his or her story is the most gruesome, the most heart-rending. ![]() In "The Song of the Goats," people from across Iraq crowd into a radio station. ![]() ![]() I keep on realizing things that I wasn't aware of when writing this review. The Hunger Games phenomenon is part of the huge YA / Children's book explosion that has grown, thanks to the British Rat pack of YA authors, Anthony Horowitz, Robert Muchamore, Mark A. He still lives there, and worked as a private investigator up until 2005 and the critically-accepted release of Maximum Security. ![]() Robert Muchamore was born in Islington, London in 1972. ![]() ![]() When the Russians come, Amir and his father move to California, where Amir becomes a successful writer. "Maybe," he thinks, "it was a hopeless place." As a boy, Amir cravenly betrays his servant and best friend, the Hazara boy Hassan. But the narrator wonders if his people will ever transcend the tribalism that continues to threaten Afghanistan's integrity. The novel portrays the Afghans as an independent and proud people who for decades have defended their country against one invader after another. The first novel to be written in English by an Afghan, it spans the period from before the 1979 Soviet invasion until the reconstruction following the fall of the odious Taliban. The Kite Runner, a novel by Afghan-American writer Khaled Hosseini, takes this clarification one step further. It needed food, not vengeance sympathy, not hate. ![]() It pleaded with Americans to realize that Afghanistan was already a devastated country. ![]() After September 11th, as it became apparent that the United States would bomb Afghanistan, an open letter written by an Afghan appeared on the Internet. ![]() ![]() ![]() It is set in a medieval-ish country with strong rulers and priests, and the main character is a barbarian who has run out of luck. I have hesitated to read this since it was said to be very violent, and OK, so it was, but there was also a lot of humour making the story one of the funniest I have read for some time. The language was elegant and the use of interspersed scientific or newspaper articles was effective. This story was more frightening, partly due to the fact that it was set in the here and now. The threat from small babies reminds me of “The Little Assassin” by Bradbury, and the rise of a new race of humans was used by Van Vogt in Slan. After some years births start again, but the new babies are strange, they develop rapidly and it is increasingly obvious that they are a threat to humanity. ![]() In the very near future (2014!) no more babies are born. ![]() ![]() (The New Human.)Īnother nice surprise – a well-written, thrilling and thought-provoking sf novel, of course with no mention of being sf other than a note that the author is a member of a blog collective that is focused on fantasy, sci-fi and horror. ![]() ![]() ![]() This recording also includes a bonus audio interview with Yung Pueblo, in conversation with Tami Simon. ![]() the courage you both have to stay committed to the inner journey will reflect brightly on your relationship.Īn unabridged audiobook, read by the author. it will embrace you so unconditionally that you will feel safe enough to heal the old and put effort into the new. On the topic of intimate relationships, he reflects:įind a partner who accepts you as you are but also inspires you to evolve because they take their own growth seriously. With his distinctive voice, at once spare and evocative, the author guides us through the excavation and release of the past that is required for growth. In Clarity and Connection, Yung Pueblo explores how intense emotions accumulate in our subconscious and condition us to act and react the ways we do. From the celebrated author of Inward comes a new collection of poetry and short prose that illuminates how past wounds impact our present relationships. ![]() ![]() ![]() In Silver Sparrow, we follow two sisters with different mothers who share the same father. She is able to convey so much by the voices she creates for two girls with a common father - given any sentence in the book, the reader will immediately know which girl is speaking, with no exaggerated accents or jarring class-related characteristics. I have admired Tayari Jones' writing since her first novel Leaving Atlanta: A Novel, and in my opinion, her writing has only improved over time. ![]() It's the kind of book that makes you want to discuss it with others right away. I had not intended to read this book so quickly or to stay up until 3 AM reading it, but I was so caught up in this beautifully written, touching story that I couldn't stop. ![]() ![]() Love is Love is a YA LGBTQ book about an overweight girl who moves to live with her Aunt and Uncle and her relationship with Jude, a transgender male who is friends with her cousin. ![]() When I first saw this book on NetGalley I immediately knew I wanted to read it from the title alone.
